28. Articles

Articles are small words in English that we put before nouns to show whether we are talking about something specific or general.

There are two types:

1. Definite Article

  • The: used when talking about something specific or already known.

    • Example: The book on the table is mine.
(A particular book, not just any book.)

2. Indefinite Articles

  • A: used before singular, countable nouns that begin with a consonant sound.

    • Example: I saw a dog in the park.

  • An: used before singular, countable nouns that begin with a vowel sound (a, e, i, o, u).

    • Example: She ate an apple.

Rules

  • Use the when the listener/reader knows which thing you mean.

  • Use a/an when talking about something for the first time or in a general sense.

  • No article is needed for plural nouns or uncountable nouns when speaking generally.

    • Example: I like music. / Dogs are friendly.
